Biomont Energie, VALECO Group’s first international project will be inaugurated on Monday 16th October 2017 , in Montreal.
VALECO Group is a French company with over 20 years of experience in the field of renewable energy production and more than 120 enthusiastic collaborators. Today, the company operates more than 355 MW in more than 50 sites. Through its projects, VALECO – which is a pioneer in the renewable energy sector with the construction of the first wind farm in France (Aude) – is sparing the emission of more than 290,000 tons of CO2 each year. Today, the group is expanding internationally with projects under development in Canada (VALECO ENERGIE QUEBEC), Vietnam (VALECO Southeast Asia) and Mexico (VALECO ENERGIA MEXICO).
The Biomont Energie project
Located on the island of Montreal at the heart of the Saint-Michel Environmental Complex, the Biomont Energie plant makes use of the biogas emanating from the former landfill site, thereby avoiding the release of methane (CH4) into the atmosphere. In partnership with Eolectric and Fondaction, Valeco Energie Quebec has studied the buyback of permits and authorizations of the project formerly initiated by Biothermica and its partners, within Gazmont, since winter 2015-2016. After obtaining the financing, the works were launched in August 2016 and lasted about 12 months.
Since 13th September 2017, the power produced by the plant is being sold to Hydro-Quebec under a 25-year power purchase agreement. At the same time, residual power recovered from exhaust gases and cooling circuits of the engines (GE-Jenbacher, biogas expert) is used to provide hot water and heating to Tohu and Cirque du Soleil facilities. This project has been implemented in partnership with the City of Montreal, the local authorities of the borough, Park services, Hydro-Québec and Gaz-Métro.
The Biomont plant will be inaugurated on Monday 16th October 2017 in the presence of Mr. Pierre Arcand, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. David Heurtel, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment and the Fight against Climate Change and Mrs. Anie Samson borough mayor of Villeray-Saint-Michel-Park-Extension.
Erick Gay, president of Valeco Group states that: “The project benefited from the combined experience emanating from the partnership bewteen Valeco, Eolectric and Fondaction. The Biomont Energie SEC plant further emphasizes biomass electricity production in Québec, in the heart of the island of Montreal, while optimizing our clients’ low-carbon energy consumption. It is a sustainable, socio-economically relevant solution based on carbon-free, locally-produced energy. Valeco is very proud to complete successfully this first project in Québec. As a French company, Valeco hopes that this achievement will pave the way for a permanent presence of its agency in Canada.”
